John,
I know that this has been a tense, unnerving week, and I am glad that things seem to have calmed down for the time being. My thoughts right now are with our brave men and women serving overseas, their families, and our allies in Iraq.
In order to keep our soldiers and allies safe, I urge our leaders to choose diplomacy over further escalation. For nearly two decades, we've seen the human cost of foreign wars. So today, in the name of peace, I joined concerned members of our community in demonstrations to call for peace at this perilous time.
We need clearer answers from the Trump administration about their rationale for killing Adm. Qasem Soleimani, and their plans to address the rapidly changing situation in the region. We need to make sure that no military escalation occurs without the explicit approval of Congress -- and I'm encouraged by the House's swift passage today of a war powers resolution.
This is a moment for leadership based on facts, not posturing or ego. Our armed forces make incredible sacrifices to protect our democracy, but it is the duty of our leaders to do everything possible to protect them and honor their service.
Thank you,
Nancy
