Next month, the Republican wrecking crew will take over the U.S. House of Representatives.
But Democrats still control Congress through the end of the year. So it’s time to shore up our defenses against the chaos the GOP wants to cause. And here’s one step we should take: Eliminating the debt ceiling. NOW.
The debt ceiling doesn’t actually do anything to limit spending. It just hands Republicans a weapon they can use to hold the global economy hostage.
The GOP already voted to run up the debt by handing tax breaks to billionaires and giant corporations. Now they’re threatening to block the United States of America from paying its bills on that debt if we don’t cut Social Security and Medicare.
We’re on track to hit the debt ceiling next year, and if we can’t raise the limit, Republicans would plunge the global economy over a cliff, just like they nearly did after they took over in 2010. But there’s no need to play their games. Let’s just take care of the debt ceiling while Democrats are still in charge.
Add your name if you agree: Democrats in Congress should act before the end of the year to eliminate the debt ceiling and prevent House Republicans from holding the global economy hostage.
No one should worry that dealing with the debt ceiling this year would be politically dangerous. In 2021, Senate Democrats raised it without a single Republican vote — and there wasn’t a single Senate Democrat who lost re-election because of it.
But if we let Republicans crash the economy next year, they’ll turn around and blame Democrats for the economic chaos — all so the GOP can help themselves take back the White House in 2024.
Republicans have no shame about imposing economic pain on families so they can point fingers at us and seize power for themselves. After all, that was their strategy against President Barack Obama. And the policies they demanded after taking back the House prolonged economic suffering for millions of Americans and helped Donald Trump get into office.
We can’t let ourselves be bullied by Republican hostage-taking and risk hurting the families we came to Washington to help. If ever there was a time for Democrats to grow a spine, this is it.
I’ll keep ringing all the alarm bells I can find and calling for Democrats to get rid of the debt ceiling before it’s too late. But I can’t do it alone.
Let’s raise our voices together on this one and make it clear to Congress that the American people are demanding action. Add your name to support eliminating the debt ceiling while Democrats still control both chambers of Congress.
Thanks for being a part of this,
Elizabeth
