After spending several week's thinking through and talking with conservatives throughout Ohio, as President of the We the People Convention, I have decided that we should Support the Constitution Protection Amendment and Oppose Ohio Senate Bill 178.
While the idea of raising the threshold for passing an Ohio Constitutional Amendment to 60% at first was concerning to me, after doing some research, it became clear that citizens groups could, and have, met that standard. For instance, the Ohio Health Care Amendment, which I was intimately involved in passing in 2011, was passed in all 88 counties with 63% of the vote.
On the other hand, as we have seen with the casino gambling bill and other Constitutional Amendments that were supported by big monied outside special interest groups, they can meet the current 51% standard just by spending money with little public support. However, in my opinion, they would need genuine buy-in from Ohio's voters to reach the 60% threshold. In short, I believe that the Constitution Protection Amendment protects the rights of Ohio Citizens and does not deny them, therefore, I ask you to tell your Ohio Representative to support this legislation.
In the case of Senate Bill 178, it is tempting to support it because it potentially addresses our total disgust and distrust of the Ohio State School Board by basically taking away all of their power over our state's education system and giving it to a newly formed department under the Governor. The problem is two fold. First we don't trust Ohio Governor DeWine to address the serious problems of Critical Race Theory and the Trans-Agenda indoctrination or the pathetic test scores by Ohio's students. So, we doubt that if SB 178 passes that ANY of our concerns will actually be addressed.
Second, if in the future a radical democrat/socialist/communist governor were to be elected in Ohio, they could single handedly destroy our educations system by appointing radicals to this new Department of Education and Workforce. That is no way to run our state's schools with no voter participation.
Furthermore, if DeWine could not be trusted to appoint conservatives to the State School Board why would we think that he will appoint conservatives to the new department? He will not. This is nothing but a power grab by the Governor and his allies in the Legislature and it should be rejected.
Therefore, we ask that you call your Representatives in the Ohio House and Primary and Secondary Education Committee (See List Below) and ask them to vote NO on SB 178. Then we need our House and Senate to do their jobs and pass the legislation that has been sitting in committee for over a year that will get boys out of girls sports, end the teaching of Critical Race Theory in our schools, and end the grooming of our children by those who wish to destroy them and our families by promoting deviate sexual behavior to innocent children against their will and without permission of the parents.
For Liberty,
Tom Zawistowski
President
