Our democracy is too important to allow the events of January 6, 2021 to happen ever again.

I have been working with my colleagues — both Democrats and fair-minded Republicans — to introduce stronger protections for our democratic systems and secure our elections. The result? Our bipartisan Electoral Count Reform Act, which would help prevent dangerous attempts from a few fringe members of Congress or a defeated President to overturn the results of an election.

Before the pro-Trump mob besieged the Capitol, far-right members of Congress and President Trump himself were hard at work attempting to exploit outdated electoral provisions to block the certification of results and ultimately reverse the will of the people who elected President Biden.

None of us can rest easy knowing that another bad actor could follow this playbook and actually succeed. The United States must remain a beacon of democracy in the world — and that starts here at home by modernizing our approach and ensuring each state’s popular vote is counted.

As with any compromise, this legislation doesn’t go as far as we’d like and we still have more work to do. But passing this bill would be a big step toward stopping the next January 6 attack.
