Dear John,

It is with great joy that we announce that California has reduced its prison population and will close a second state prison in an effort to cut the state's $14.2 billion corrections budget. This is possible because of the hard and dedicated work of advocates in the space and allies like you who are committed to real reform. Please consider making a gift today ([link removed]) to help us advocate for changes like this – which decrease our carceral system and ensure that less people are incarcerated.

We applaud Governor Newsom for announcing plans to close Chuckawalla Valley State Prison in 2025, deactivate yards across six prisons, and end the lease with the company that owns the California City Correctional Facility. This win is a win for us all and we hope that more people will get the chance to come home to their communities while receiving reentry support to move forward in life.

Closing prisons saves money. In 2022 alone, California is slated to spend about $18.8 billion on its prison system. California’s Legislative Analyst’s Office earlier this year estimated that shutting five state prisons would save $1.5 billion a year, and the closing of Chuckawalla is an important step towards that goal.

ARC works to end mass incarceration and reduce recidivism through advocacy and our comprehensive programs—both inside and outside prisons—that empower formerly incarcerated men and women to rebuild their lives. With nearly 80% system-impacted staff, we not only provide services critical to successful reentry, but also work to advocate for the closure of prisons and the development of a more equitable and just system.

To achieve our mission of ending mass incarceration and supporting folks returning home from incarceration, we depend on the generosity of allies like you. We are grateful for your support and hope you take great pride in the difference that your support makes.

Continuing to invest in our mission ([link removed]) will ensure that more incarcerated people are brought home and that more and more people can rebuild their lives. Thank you for considering making a gift today and thank you, as always, for your commitment to our work.

Sincerely,

Sam Lewis
