John — last year I got hurt. I fell down the stairs and injured my hips. But I didn't want to miss work, because I’m a housecleaner.

If I don't work, I don't earn. Housecleaners like me don't get paid sick leave or health insurance.

I missed one week, but had to go back to work even though I was still in pain. The pain didn't go away and, after multiple doctors visits, I learned I had fractured my ribs and dislocated my hip.

Before my injury, I was barely making ends meet. Now, I owe over $1,000 in medical bills that I’m working to pay off.

A donation today will help power the fight for domestic workers like me to get benefits and basic workplace protections. John, can you donate to the National Domestic Workers Alliance today?

Together with my aunts, I started cleaning houses when I was about 15 years old. I was in high school so I just worked occasionally. Cleaning work is hard work. You have to go up and down three floors while carrying a heavy vacuum.

When I graduated from high school, I went to college. But, when the pandemic hit I had to drop out of college to support my family, because they all lost work.

I had money saved to pay for another semester of college, but I had to put it toward the medical debt from the fall.

That's what hurts me the most: that I had to drop out of school to pay off this debt. I want to be a social worker. I want to continue fighting for the rights of others.

That's why I joined my local organization Unidad Latina en Acción - Connecticut, and now I'm a leader in the Housecleaners Council of the National Domestic Workers Alliance. Alongside other domestic worker leaders from around the country, I'm meeting congresspeople and Senators, and talking with the media to push for domestic workers like me to get access to basic workplace protections, benefits, and rights that so many other workers have.

John, your financial support makes all this possible. Can you help power our fight by donating to the National Domestic Workers Alliance today?
