The Supreme Court says it can be its own ethical watchdog. I take issue with that.
First, there was the leaked decision in the case that would overturn Roe v. Wade. The Chief Justice said there would be an investigation into that leak, but we've heard crickets since.
That was followed by another news report detailing the secret influence campaign aimed at the Court by wealthy right-wing activists, which resulted in the alleged breach of another decision several years back.
Each detail we learn about Ginni Thomas’s involvement in the January 6 insurrection makes clearer she was trying to overturn the will of the people to keep Trump in office. Yet the Court seems content not to look into Justice Clarence Thomas’s assertion that he knew nothing of his wife’s activities, and he's refused to recuse himself from cases involving the insurrection, even now that he does know.
The Supreme Court confirmation process has gotten bogged down in dark money, with anonymous megadonors (who very well may have business before the Court) writing checks in the millions of dollars to push the nominations of handpicked Federalist Society justices.
I could go on. Meanwhile, in full public view, the far-right Supreme Court continues to twist itself into pretzels to deliver for Republican interests.
Why isn't the highest court in our country held to the same transparency and ethical standards as the other branches of government, or even other courts?
The Supreme Court asks Americans to “trust us.” But I'm pushing for an enforceable code of ethics for the Supreme Court. Will you join me in this fight by pitching in to support my campaign?
The Supreme Court needs to be more accountable to the American people. It’s long overdue.
