Friends,

I’m excited to share that the Fair Workweek ordinance was recently passed by the Los Angeles City Council. This is a hard-fought, historic victory for Los Angeles retail workers. LAANE's Grocery and Retail Team, under the leadership of United Food and Commercial Workers (UFCW) Local 770, have been working toward this day for five years.

Led by Councilmember Curren D. Price, Jr., the council voted unanimously to approve the ordinance, which will make work schedules more fair among other protections for retail workers. The ordinance is expected to go into effect April 2023.

Los Angeles has finally joined the growing chorus of cities that have passed fair scheduling policies, including New York City, San Francisco, Seattle, Philadelphia, and Chicago.

The heart of the Fair Workweek Policy ensures that retail workers in the city:
- Receive two weeks' notice of their schedules;
- Are not forced to work "clopening" shifts or to remain "on-call" for shifts;
- Will not be retaliated against for requesting a change in their shift;
- Will receive additional compensation for last-minute changes to their schedules; and
- Will be offered additional hours at their place of employment before employers hire additional part-time workers.

The retail industry is the second largest employer in Los Angeles. A majority of retail workers from communities of color and identify as women. The policy applies to employers with at least 300 employees globally in the retail and grocery sector; it will impact 70,000 retail and grocery workers citywide.

It has been a long journey to get here and we are so grateful for all of your support.

When we fight, we win!

In solidarity,
Roxana Tynan
