CHAPTER SPOTLIGHT
OCA-Greater Tucson

On November 3rd, Dr. Leslie Moe-Kaiser, President OCA Greater Tucson, participated in the quarterly Tucson Unified School District Professional Development Day for elementary teachers, administrators, and staff. The program was organized by Ms. Yoon Lee, Coordinator of Asian Pacific American & Refugee Student Services. Presentations were intended to garner support for inclusion of AANHPI curricula in Arizona K-12 schools in a state bill. Leslie presented “Let’s Learn about Calendars,” and Yvonne So, Board Chair OCA Greater Phoenix, presented “Water Boys,” both from the OCA bank of modules. About 35 attended. Astria Wong, President OCA Greater Phoenix, presented “AAPAs building Arizona Community,” a module she developed.

We also distributed two sets fo children’s books to teachers for their school libraries and to the TUSD Diversity Library. One was the COVID publication made available by OCA from a generous publisher. They were very well-received, and all extra volumes were taken.

We Hope You Can Consider Donating Towards These National and Local Programs

OCA Chapters are volunteer-run, yet they make huge impacts on their communities. Your support will not only provide the resources needed to continue our programs, but also advance our advocacy—including efforts to combat anti-Asian hate, promote AAPI history in K-12 schools, and protect our communities during the pandemic.

PAY IT FORWARD

AAPI Digital Access Survey

Internet access has become a civil rights issue - we want to advocate for digital equity by listening to our AAPI communities. Specifically, we want to understand where and how AAPIs have internet access.

The collected data will be used to bridge the digital divide among the AAPI community by informing legislators, policy makers, Internet Service Providers (ISPs), and other stakeholders.

Help us create a disaggregated data set and challenge the model minority myth that most AAPIs have stable, high-speed internet and have technology devices!

Participants can enter a raffle to earn a $100 Amazon gift card after they take the survey.

Here is the link to the survey – it is currently available in English, Simplified Chinese, Traditional Chinese, Korean, Nepali, Urdu, and Khmer. (Other languages are pending.)

Please take the survey first, and share it with your family, friends, colleagues, and peers – especially those with limited internet access.

If you have any questions or concerns, please send an email to our Broadband Access and Digital Equity Fellow, Yen Jeong.

The State of Chinese Americans Survey— Your Input Is Needed!

We are excited to share with you a project that OCA-Asian Pacific American Advocates has been invited to partner on. Columbia University and Committee of 100 have developed a nationwide survey focused on Chinese Americans, to gather information that will shed light on the status and needs of today’s Chinese American population.

This is the first survey of its kind that is designed to focus specifically on Chinese Americans, and the survey findings will be used to inform policymakers and the public on policies and programs that can better serve the needs of Chinese American communities across the country.

Your participation is the most important part of this project, and we encourage you to take this survey HERE today and make your voice heard! Please feel free to reach out to us or [email protected] with any questions.

We hope you agree that this is an important project for Chinese Americans across the country and that you will help by including your voice in this pioneering endeavor.
