By expanding protections for this sacred site, the Biden administration will ensure these tribes can rest easy knowing that all of their ancestors’ lands are safe.
John,
Since he took office two years ago, President Biden has taken several steps to protect our public lands from drilling and development. Now, he’s taking things even further.
Last month, President Biden signed off on the largest act of land conservation of his entire term. The administration is preparing a proclamation that could put roughly 450,000 acres around Nevada’s Spirit Mountain off limits to development under the 1906 Antiquities Act.
This is huge, John. Not only is this an important step forward for our overall conservation efforts, but this decision will preserve a sacred tribal site for the Fort Mojave Native American tribe as well as 11 other Native American Nations.
Spirit Mountain, or Avi Kwa Ame in Mojave, is central to the creation story of these 12 nations. 20 years ago, Congress took the first steps to protect the mountain by designating 33,000 acres around it as wilderness. By expanding protections for this sacred site, the Biden administration will ensure these tribes can rest easy knowing that all of their ancestors’ lands are safe.
