John,

Just days after Donald Trump made the reckless decision to bring us closer to war with Iran, he escalated tensions by threatening to take out Iranian cultural sites among 52 targeted bombings.

Besides this being a war crime under the Geneva Convention and illegal, the truth is, these cultural sites do not just belong to Iran.

They belong to all of us. Notre-Dame in Paris, Angkor Wat in Cambodia, the Taj Mahal in India, the Acropolis in Greece, the Lincoln Memorial, Petra in Jordan.

These sites belong to humanity.  Throughout our history, our society has developed a sense of identity. Our identity shapes us but does not limit us.

We see this through amazing works of art or architecture, at cultural and religious places, and it helps each of us understand our human potential.

We must fervently denounce any consideration of this as a tactic of war. Donald Trump is not fit to lead the United States. We should all be worried for our standing in the world. This week our allies wonder what has become of the USA.

Join me in speaking up against War with Iran, speaking up against an America that would bomb cultural sites, speaking up for bringing courage back to Washington.

Here are the immediate and ongoing consequences of Trump’s actions:

  • The U.S. military has suspended all operations against ISIS, as American service members have been forced to reposition and take cover.

  • The Iraqi Parliament has voted to kick American troops out of the country, which, if implemented, would be a further boon to ISIS and provide even more of a welcome mat for Iranian influence in Iraq.

  • We now have more than 15,000 additional U.S. troops in the region than we did at the start of the summer.

  • An Iranian public that only weeks ago was protesting its own political leaders is now directing its ire at Washington.

  • Iran has stepped even farther away from the nuclear deal, announcing that it would no longer abide by the deal’s strict enrichment limits.

  • The United States finds itself even more isolated from our allies and partners, many of whom have condemned the Trump administration’s reckless approach.

We must demand an end to war escalation with Iran. The potential consequences are mounting.

Thank you for standing with me.
