Dear Reader,
You may (or may not) know we’re a nonprofit. As PublicSource’s audience engagement editor, I like to say we’re people-powered. We are funded by our neighbors — by you. And that’s how we like it. People-powered means we put our neighbors at the core of our mission.
As the former education reporter at PublicSource, when I was penning stories about COVID-generated upheaval at school districts across the Pittsburgh area, parents wrote to me. Students and teachers spoke with me. Because they shared their experiences, I could write stories that increased knowledge about what community members were facing and how they were responding. It’s been a year since I waved goodbye to the K-12 beat.
While there are times I miss it, my days now are filled with getting to see which of our stories empower and encourage people to want to power us.
Much of my work exists behind the bylines now. I build editions of our Roundup newsletter. I review analytics to decipher which stories you love and need most. I go to events and listen to you, to our community, hearing about what unmet needs you see, what issues keep you up at night and what changes and causes you feel are worth celebrating.
And then, I help us to respond with journalism that matters — when a bridge collapses or students take to the streets or a new virus is developing.

Soon, we’ll enter a new year, full of new efforts to connect with you. Showing up in new formats, in new ways, with stories that impact and shape your life. Who knows what’s in store for us all? What we do know is that we have no intention of stopping the work we do. We will keep bringing you story after story in hopes of a better Pittsburgh.
