Welcome to our weekly newsletter about mental health services and support available in Barnet and beyond. Also bringing you updates on Inclusion Barnet mental health news. Produced by Ed Peston, Communications Assistant.
Inclusion Barnet Events and News Inclusion Barnet AGM 2022
You’re invited to our Annual General Meeting!

Plus festive refreshments and social time from 3pm to 3.30pm

This is a great opportunity to come and meet some of our staff and Trustees. Two of our staff will also be doing short presentations on the work they’ve been doing around Benefits advice and Healthy Heart support in the Carribean, African and South Asian communities in Barnet.
If you can’t make it to our office, you can still join the meeting via Zoom, though I am afraid we won’t be able to post you a mince pie!

Sadly, 3 times the number of men as women die by suicide and men are much less likely to seek help if they are struggling. Dave will be talking about his personal experience with mental ill health.

How to prioritise self-care when working in music (From Help Musicians), Monday 12 December, 11.00am - 12.00pm
While a career in music can be fun and rewarding, it can also create difficult conditions in which to look after your mental wellbeing. Long periods spent away from home, lifestyle factors, irregular work, financial difficulties, isolating work conditions, and lack of routine all have the potential to exacerbate any struggles you may already be experiencing. These situations can have a very real impact on your ability to fully engage with and to enjoy what you do. Developing coping strategies to overcome these difficult moments will help you keep alive your love for your profession, allowing you to enjoy more fully the amazing parts of working in music and make the most of your career in the long term.

An hour of singing for the soul. Victoria will share with you some short, simple but deeply nourishing or uplifting songs that will go in easily, no matter what your experience. Insight into Creative Psychotherapy (Expressing Emotions Creatively) (From Crawley Mindfulness Centre), Monday 12 December, 6.00 - 7.00pm
A chance to express yourself creatively, using creative therapeutic techniques and exercises facilitated by Dramatherapist Emma-Jo. These classes provide insight into ways you can include creativity in your life to help process emotions, trauma, to aid healing, stress, anxiety, feeling overwhelmed and more, within creative methods to aid safety. Guided meditations will be used throughout and a chance to check in with yourself, providing a space to just 'be' in a world where we are constantly having to 'do'.

Addictive Eaters Anonymous online meetings, Thursdays 6.30 - 7.30am and Fridays 7.00 - 8.00pm
Addictive Eaters Anonymous (AEA) is a fellowship of men and women who share their experience, strength and hope with each other that they may solve their common problem and help others to recover from addictive eating.
AEA has members who have suffered from anorexia, bulimia and binge eating. Many have been underweight, overweight or obese; others were people of average weight yet suffered with an obsession with food. Members may have used exercise and other substances to try and control their weight. Before coming to AEA, members found that they were powerless over food, and unable to stop the food obsession.

Thriving at Christmas in Eating Disorder Recovery (From Orri - Specialist Eating Disorder Treatment), Monday 12 December, 6.30 - 7.30pm
Sometimes, Christmas isn't the "most wonderful time of the year". Especially for individuals and their families in eating disorder recovery.
When we thinking about treatment for an eating disorder, we have to think about treating the whole person – mind and body – for sustainable and autonomous recovery. This includes an individual's loved ones and environment.
In this free event, Orri's multi-disciplinary team will come together to explore how to thrive in eating disorder recovery over the festive period.

Meet the author and pioneer of Psychologically Informed Environments (PIE) (From CDI), Wednesday 14 December, 12.30 - 1.30pm
Dr. Dean Whittington is a pioneer of delivering therapy to those people existing on the social margins which includes young people at risk of social exclusion, the homeless, those in care and substance/alcohol users. As the person who pioneered trauma work in the substance use field and then later working with the homeless populations, it led to the concept of psychologically informed environments being first articulated. The talk draws from his reflections on his experiences to highlight some of the ongoing issues that have previously remained hidden.

Building resilience during the festive season (From Deafblind UK), Tuesday 13 December, 1.00 - 2.00pm
Boosting your resilience can help protect your health and wellbeing during the festive season. Dealing with stress is very personal and challenging, and entering the winter season is a marathon, not a sprint. It may feel harder than usual to commit to wellness strategies, but they are a vital way to support ourselves. In this session, PUSH coach Stephanie will share some tips to manage stress and build resilience to help ease the pressures of the festive season.

This workshop explores your understanding of anxiety, types of anxiety, causes and responses to it. They will examine examples of self-care and identify ways of supporting someone with anxiety. They will develop a plan with individual tips and tools as it is considered how to manage anxiety and build a recovery toolbox.

We are a Peer-Led Deaf and Disabled People’s Organisation (DDPO).
Nearly all of our directors and staff have lived experience of disability, including mental health issues and/or long-term health conditions.
We believe that learning to use our lived experience for social change is a skill. We have become experts in harnessing the lived experience of our staff, members, volunteers and the people who use our services to design and deliver higher quality, more person-centred services.
