If Congress wants to stop the next coup attempt, they must act now.
In 2020, when Donald Trump tried to overturn the will of the voters, his strategy relied on exploiting the Electoral Count Act's vagueness to push state legislatures to appoint electors for him regardless of the popular vote.
Fortunately, many refused. And as we all know, Pence wouldn’t do what Trump or the violent mob wanted -- so Trump’s plan failed. But frighteningly, the plan could work in 2024 for Trump or any other authoritarian nominee willing to steal an election to take power.
Which is why the Electoral Count Reform Act -- now before Congress -- is so important.
These vital reforms must be enacted before the end of this Congress because Republicans likely won’t touch it once they control the House.
Send a direct message to Senators and demand they fix the Electoral Count Act now, before it’s too late!
The U.S. House has already done their job. They passed a bill to fix the ECA -- with bipartisan support -- earlier this year. Now the Senate must do the same.
The bill would clarify that state legislatures cannot overturn election results they don't like by submitting their own slate of fake electors as Trump urged them to do in 2020.
But time is running out. If the Senate doesn’t pass these reforms before the end of the year, the legislative session will reset in January and Congress would have to start over from scratch.
And let’s be clear, once election deniers make up the majority of the MAGA Republican controlled House, these reforms hardly stand a chance.
