An Update on the Earthquake in Puerto Rico
No electricity, shelter or safety inside

Dear friend,

The last few days have been terrifying and exhausting for many families in Puerto Rico. A 6.4 magnitude earthquake shook the island early Tuesday morning, destroying buildings in the southern parts of the country, causing two-thirds of the island to lose power.

More than 40 earthquakes with a 3.0-magnitude or higher followed, threatening recovery efforts. Our team is now on the ground near the cities of Ponce and Guanadilla, evaluating how we can help. We've already delivered 120 cold storage bags to keep medications safe to use.

What we're seeing so far:
- Roads are damaged and communication networks are unreliable, making travel and the transportation of supplies difficult.

- People with diabetes on the island are worried about having enough insulin, as well as how they can store it safely when they don't have electricity.

- Whole families are sleeping in cars as some shelters were too badly damaged by the quake and others are beyond capacity.

- Many other people are simply sleeping outside as the earthquake's aftershocks and tremors continue to shake buildings and cause fear.

What we're doing now:
- Ensuring insulin supplies are safe with special FRIO bags that keep the medication cold.

- Coordinating with government responders and other organizations to find and meet the needs of survivors.

- Evaluating how we can help and working with shelters to identify medications that may be needed.

Project HOPE has been working to help the people of Puerto Rico recover from the devastation of Hurricane Maria since 2017, and we will keep you updated on our response and how to help. Our work around the world is only possible because of the compassion and care of supporters like you.

Thank you,
Andrea Dunne-Sosa
