Jack,
No matter how much you hear about it, you can never be ready for the feeling of awe inspired by your first trip to Montgomery Woods Natural Reserve.
Coming from Ukiah, you descend into the valley… and it’s like you’ve arrived in another world. Immense, old-growth redwoods, gnarled by time and fire, tower over expanses of soft green ferns, trickling streams, and wildflowers. There’s a powerful quiet, punctuated by occasional birdsong.
Montgomery Woods and the forest around it comprise a strikingly beautiful and ecologically important corner of the redwood range — for both recreational visitors and conservation.
Now, we have an unprecedented opportunity to safeguard, restore, and share an incredible redwood landscape around this reserve, adding to its protection.
All gifts up to $250,000 will be matched toward the Montgomery Woods Initiative.
Save the Redwoods League has a long history here. We have been instrumental in protecting nearly all of Montgomery Woods’ 2,743 acres since 1947.
Now, we’ve expanded our vision for the park and surrounding forest. Our goal is to enhance the park experience, safeguard its natural treasures, and dramatically expand the protected area around it.
The Montgomery Woods Initiative began with the acquisition of Atkins Place earlier this year. The League now has the opportunity to purchase a conservation easement on Weger Ranch, which shares a 1.25-mile border with the reserve.
Weger Ranch is the largest non-industrial private forest in the Big River Watershed, containing coast redwood and Douglas fir, with nearly 400 scattered old-growth trees.
This initiative brings together everything the League strives for: protecting invaluable forests, restoring damaged forests, and connecting people with these cherished places.
Will you make your matched gift now? Your gift will double to protect this otherworldly landscape.
Thank you for considering a gift at year’s end.
