Flormila is a young mother who lives in Carabayllo, Peru. After nearly recovering from COVID-19, she began to feel worse—coughing again, losing weight, and spiking a fever. PIH’s team in Peru diagnosed her with Tuberculosis (TB) as well as COVID-19.

Clearing TB from Flormila’s system meant a grueling six-month regimen of four different intense medications—11 pills per day. The side effects are hard to deal with alone, especially while caring for her young children (and preventing them from catching the airborne illness by giving them medications of their own). So, PIH’s team, known locally as Socios En Salud, made sure Flormila wasn’t alone.
In a classic example of PIH’s groundbreaking “Accompaniment Model,” a locally-trained PIH community health worker named Cristina walked side-by-side with Flormila throughout her treatment journey.

With over a decade of experience to draw on, Cristina checked in with the young mother at her home, traveled with her to the clinic, and helped her refill her prescriptions. Perhaps most crucially, she provided emotional support and a much-needed listening ear.
In September, the PIH team declared Flormila free of TB. For the first time in months, she felt like she could breathe again.
