Hi John,
Even as our hearts were heavy with tragic news [[link removed]] out of Iran this week, Congress was busy, taking steps to advance resolutions standing with the brave people of Iran . Now, we need to raise our voice to call on the House and Senate to pass these resolutions before they expire in the New Year. Also, a bill that would add years of wait time for Iranians seeking green cards was dealt a major setback, though proponents of the bill are redoubling their efforts to pass it.
Committees Advance Iran Protest Resolutions
Thanks to your critical advocacy, the foreign affairs committees in the House and Senate passed legislation commending the bravery of the people of Iran, condemning Iran’s brutal crackdown, calling for targeted human rights sanctions and urging steps to expand internet access . Now, they move on to the full House of Representatives and Senate - but there are only a few days left to schedule a floor vote.
As you know, the human rights situation in Iran is worse than it has ever been. However, time is running out to pass these resolutions before the New Year and a new session of Congress.
Take action now: tell Congressional leadership to schedule a vote to stand with the people of Iran [[link removed]] !
Major Setback for Immigration Bill
The EAGLE Act, which would add years of additional wait for green card seekers from Iran and many other countries, was scheduled for a vote on the House floor on Wednesday. However, that vote was canceled and no vote was held this week, signaling that passage is in doubt. Powerful advocates for the bill are redoubling their efforts to try to jam it through the House and Senate in the final weeks of the year - and we are busy working to stop them.
We can’t let this bill pass and harm diverse immigrant communities and subject Iranian nationals to a painful, years-long wait in the green card backlog.
Keep up the momentum: Tell your legislators to reject the EAGLE Act! [[link removed]]
Message Congress: Oppose Eagle Act [[link removed]]
