Dear John,

Yesterday, the House voted in favor of final passage of the (Dis)Respect for Marriage Act to redefine marriage in federal law, without meaningful religious liberty protections. In the end, 39 Republicans joined Democrats to vote in favor of the final bill. Now, the bill heads to President Biden, who is expected to sign it into law.

Will you send a message to Delegate Norton, your senators thanking those who voted "no" and telling those who voted "yes" of your disappointment?

This is a sobering moment in our nation's history. America is now charging full steam ahead down a path largely unexplored by any human society in history, but which God's Word, biological reality, and social science research indicate is counterproductive to human flourishing. As you are aware, this legislation will have severe consequences for religious entities, children, and those of us who still believe that marriage is between one man and one woman.

So, what now? In a recent appearance on Washington Watch, Dr. Carl Trueman (author and professor at Grove City College) spoke on how Christian citizens should respond to this moment. He said, "I think it's very important that Christians are in church on a Sunday. We have to be part of a strong Christian community. We have to be under the teaching of the Word. We have to be taking the sacraments together. We have to be a community. We have to support each other. Secondly, I think it's absolutely appropriate that Christians use the civil liberties that they do have, the civil rights that they do have, in order to press for good policy."

Thank you for all the actions you have taken in the past weeks and months, calling and emailing your senators and representative on this issue. It has not gone unnoticed. After the final vote in the Senate, Senator Kyrsten Sinema (AZ) said, "the attempts to derail this piece of legislation were probably more focused and robust than any other bills I've worked on in the last two years." Although 12 Republican senators voted for the bill, there have been reports that it could have been as high as 30 had constituents like you not engaged.

This is a discouraging outcome, but Jesus warned His disciples that difficult and evil times were coming. He gave the warning so that they would not lose their faith or their joy. He said we should be at peace in these turbulent times. "These things I have spoken to you, that in Me you may have peace. In the world, you will have tribulation but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world" (John 16:33).

Thank you for continuing to stand with us for faith, family, and freedom.

Standing (Eph. 6:13),

Tony Perkins
President
