My name is Denise Fernández, I am the Director of Benefits Access at Hunger Free NYC, a division of Hunger Free America. Alongside our devoted team of Benefits Specialists, I work daily on the front lines of hunger, assisting low-income New Yorkers in all five boroughs access vital food programs such as SNAP (formerly called food stamps) and WIC (for pregnant women and children under five.)

Every day clients say things to us like, “I’m so embarrassed”, “I’ve never had to do this before”, “I didn’t know what else to do”, “I didn’t know where else to turn.” Clients come to us in crisis, at times on the verge of tears, looking for any assistance that can help put food on their tables.

At Hunger Free America, we welcome and assist our clients with kindness, compassion, and understanding. But we cannot do this work without your help. For every dollar that you donate, our team can help a hungry family access $60 in SNAP benefits. ([link removed]) Families are facing a shrinking grocery budget at a time when food prices are skyrocketing. It costs 13% more to fill grocery carts than it did just a year ago, and with far fewer grocery dollars to spend, families are being forced to make difficult choices.
