John,
Time is running out for the 117th Congress to act on phone justice.
Color Of Change members like you and our phone justice coalition partners have continued to put pressure on Congress to pass the Martha Wright Prison Phone Justice Act.
The legislation would give the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) more authority to regulate how much prisons and jails can charge incarcerated people and their families for phone calls. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senate Leader Chuck Schumer have a chance to move this bill forward by inserting it in the final spending package of the year.
CALL SPEAKER PELOSI AND LEADER SCHUMER TO KEEP FAMILIES CONNECTED
Color Of Change members have done their part by signing petitions, making calls and sending faxes and tweets to their representatives in Congress. We have sent target letters to these congressional representatives, had multiple meetings with congressional staff and will keep fighting on behalf of Black families who are being targeted by the predatory prison telecom system.
Telecom companies such as Securus (owned by Aventiv Technologies) and ViaPath Technologies (formerly GTL) make billions of dollars each year by preying on incarcerated people and their loved ones. These companies charge unconscionable rates for phone calls to and from prison — up to $1 a minute.
John, we need Congress, and especially Speaker Pelosi and Leader Schumer, to act and pass this legislation before the holidays. Incarcerated people and their loved ones deserve to stay connected, period. The Martha Wright Prison Phone Justice Act can help make that possible.
We CAN and MUST pass this legislation to change lives across the country. With your help, we can win.
Thank you for fighting to keep families connected.
Sakira Cook, Vice President
