The Respect for Marriage Act passed both chambers of Congress and marriage equality is on its way to becoming law.
This is the latest in our fight to codify same-sex and interracial marriage protections, in addition to the strides we have already made to protect women’s rights, voting rights, and pro-climate legislation.
We would not be able to accomplish this without your support!
The Respect for Marriage Act came in response to the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade, when they alluded to the right to same-sex marriage being next on the chopping block.
This landmark bipartisan bill ensures all legally performed same-sex and interracial marriages are recognized in all 50 states and repeals the Defense of Marriage Act, which defined marriage as being between one man and one woman only.
I was proud to cast my vote in support of the Respect for Marriage Act. Thirty-nine of my Republican colleagues joined us in this vote, but one-hundred and sixty-nine did not. This just shows that our fight for marriage equality is far from over.
As we celebrate this incredible progress, you and I both know that there's still more work to be done. We must protect LGBTQ+ rights and continue to fight for equality for all marginalized communities.
