New ?Green Heart? to take shape in 2023 following year of progress for Nottingham?s Broad Marsh

It?s a year since the exciting vision for reimagining the Broad Marsh area was unveiled, with a new ?Green Heart? as its centrepiece which so many people called for in our consultation. I?m really pleased that next year, work can start on this element of the area?s transformation, with new images showing just what an amazing space is going to be created in our city centre.

It?s an area the size of Nottingham Forest?s pitch at the City Ground, which will be covered in trees and planting, creating a natural, tranquil green space with pathways between Nottingham Station and Old Market Square.

This is the latest step towards creating a welcoming gateway to the city, with major progress over the last 12 months, including:

* Demolishing the west side of the shopping centre and a new pedestrian walkway opened up across the site
* Fitting-out of our state-of-the-art new Central Library on track for opening next year
* Opening the new Bus Station and Car Park
* Creating new public space and public art around Carrington Street and Sussex Street, where a new Skateable Space is being developed
* Submitting a bid to the Government?s Levelling Up Fund for developing the Frame as a key element of the Broad Marsh vision.

Our efforts to reinvent this part of our city centre are due to get international coverage this weekend, with a feature running on CNN tomorrow at 5pm and 6pm and Sunday at 10.30pm.

Staying warm and well this winter

warm and well [ [link removed] ]

During the cold weather, it is really important that you take care of yourself and take care of each other. High energy bills are a worry to everyone this winter, but it?s important to stay warm by making sure your main living room is heated to at least 18?C, Wear extra layers of clothing whether you are inside or outside, have plenty of warm drinks and keep moving and stay as active as possible.

If you?re worried about your energy bills you could get ?150 off your winter 2022/23 bill under the Warm Home Discount Scheme. To find out if you qualify and how to get the discount visit www.gov.uk/the-warm-home-discount-scheme [ [link removed] ]. For tips and advice if you?re worried about money, visit: www.asklion.co.uk/money [ [link removed] ]

As well as taking care of yourself, please try to help vulnerable neighbours or relatives by checking if they?re warm enough and have enough food and medicine, especially if they?re struggling to get out of the house. A little can go a long way ? checking in on elderly or vulnerable neighbours can really give them a boost and sometimes, it?s a few minutes? company they need as much as picking something up from the shops.

Council secures ?10m of Government prosperity funding

?10m funding

It?s great news that the City Council has secured over ?10m from the Government?s UK Shared Prosperity Fund (UK SPF) which aims to support local residents, businesses, and communities.

While the funding available is significantly less than the European funding the UK SPF has replaced, ?10,454,325 is very welcome and will help us and local organisations deliver services and schemes which can make a real difference to local people.

The funding will be used in a combination of ways, including the council providing grants to public or private organisations, commissioning third party organisations, procuring service provision and direct delivery of services by the Council. Some will be used this financial year, delivering local benefits straight away, but the funding is available until 2024/25. More information about how UK SPF will be delivered across the city and guidance on how to access funding are available here [ [link removed] ].

A Celebration of Christmas: Sunday 18 December

Christmas Concert

I hope you will be able to join us for a special Christmas event at the Arboretum on Sunday 18 December at 12.30pm. Carlton Male Voice Choir will provide the music for an hour of festive songs and seasonal readings. I?ll be joined by the Lord Mayor of Nottingham, who will host the event ? which will have something for the whole family. Hot drinks and mince pies will be available? and we will be finished in time for people to watch the World Cup football final.

It promises to be a wonderful, festive occasion. I?m especially pleased that we can host this event at the Arboretum as this is the first Christmas since Covid that we are able to properly join together in person. I?ve missed the opportunity to celebrate with others so I hope as many people as possible will come along to help us make up for lost time.
