John,

One year ago, we made history: on December 9, 2021, the New York City Council passed Local Law 11 which expanded municipal voting rights to legal permanent residents and those with work authorizations. This opened the door for over 800,000 New Yorkers to make their voice heard in their city.

But our work is far from over — the pushback we’ve witnessed since passing Local Law 11 has made it clear that our movement poses a huge threat to the status quo and Republican leaders will do whatever it takes to combat our efforts for equal access to voting rights.

Despite overwhelming support from City Council members, organizers, and New Yorkers, conservative Judge Porzio who sits on the Supreme Court in Staten Island unjustly struck down Local Law 11 in June. Why? Because conservatives knew from the start that providing equal voting access to those who live, work and pay taxes here would be a huge threat to the power they hold.

We’re appealing Judge Porzio’s decision because we need our local leaders’ priorities to reflect the vision and needs of their community members. When we win on appeal, we will finally be able to build a more equitable, representative New York City. We will not rest until that dream is a reality.

Thank you for joining us in this fight! We couldn’t have come this far without our members, allies, and supporters like you.

¡Sí se puede!
