Dear
Friend --
Imagine you are going about your regular business, when suddenly
you see a giant inflatable mushroom cloud right outside of parliament
with many translations of the word “Zero” on it. Would it make you
curious enough to speak with the people standing beneath it?
From experience, we know that the answer is yes, public actions and
visual stunts help us start conversations about nuclear weapons, and
the existence of the UN Treaty banning them. That is why we want to
roll out a series of eye-catching actions against nuclear
weapons in 2023, and we are raising the funds to make that a reality.
Will you contribute?
Yes, I'll Donate
Public actions and visual stunts increase
the pressure on decision-makers. They strengthen our advocacy and
campaigning. We have already seen some powerful actions in our campaign,
including:
• that
three-story inflatable mushroom cloud. In September our Swedish
partners teamed up with the Mexican artist Pedro Reyes to set
up the Amnesia Atomica artwork outside parliament in
Stockholm as the new parliament session opened. The stunt
drew out dozens of MPs, who joined our Parliamentary Pledge on the
spot, and hundreds of passersby who signed the petition urging the
Swedish government to join the treaty.
• All the way
across the world, our campaigners in Australia have been using a giant
inflatable missile with the word illegal on it, to very similar
effect. And we're seeing signs that the continued pressure on
Australia's government to join the treaty is working.
• And back in
January, our partner NYCAN teamed up with an incredible illuminator
collective in New York, to project the message: “Nuclear Weapons Are
Illegal, Join the Treaty!” onto the main UN building in different
languages.
The possibilities are endless, but resources for our partners to
pull off these kinds of actions are not. So we have created a
new fund to power visual stunts across the world: the
ICAN Rapid Response Fund.
Our goal is to raise $50,000 before the end of the
year, and we’ve already raised nearly 20%. Will you pitch in? Every contribution,
small or large, enables our campaigners to grab the public’s attention
with props or print handouts, to bring a photographer to get the right
shot, and much more.

I am excited to see what we can do together, next year, when the
power of our campaign takes to the streets calling for an end to
nuclear weapons. Thank you for all you do to stand with us!
Best,
Lucero Oyarzun Digital Campaign Coordinator ICAN
