Wasted Humanity

My days in Southern California are numbered, but I am still here for now and some days being here is overwhelming.  My business travels this date took me through parts of the San Fernando Valley that have for many years been of below average income, largely Hispanic, but to date have avoided the great scourges of LA.  Today that all changed.  I was approached by three beggars while trying to buy a soda at a convenience store and went past three new, sizeable homeless encampments on a route I take at least a couple of times a month.

And the people I saw just made me sad.  Mentally ill, some of them barely dressed on a very cold morning with plenty of threadbare stuff around them to keep them warm.  Probably a lot of addiction; definitely a lot of filth – their lives were...

“Unintended Consequences” or “What Experts Don’t Know Can Hurt You”

Expertise is a funny thing.  In a world with as much knowledge as this world contains, expertise in any given area generally means there are other areas one does not spend much time learning about.  Expertise is as much about focus as it is about knowledge.  But in order to focus on something very specific, of necessity other things get ignored.  This is one of the reasons I decided against pursuing a PhD in my academic field of Chemistry.  In order to obtain such a degree my focus would have had to become very narrow – to the point of stifling curiosity in other areas.

Tyranny is Not the Answer

Been an interesting morning for me.  If you are unaware a few states have brought litigation against Fauci, et. al. alleging collusion with social media to control the flow of information regarding the pandemic.  The full transcript of Fauci’s deposition has been recently released.  Here it is.  I have only read up to about page 138, of 400-some, and there is a lot that could be said.  But I want to limit myself to one observation that relates also to the release of the so called “Twitter files.”
