When the new $847 billion National Defense Authorization Act hits President Biden’s desk soon, it will include a provision that ends the requirement that all members of the military be vaccinated against COVID-19. Biden does not like the provision but has little choice because the bill is essential to keep the Pentagon and everything it controls running. Republicans also wanted to reinstate the thousands of members of the armed services who lost their positions for failing to get vaccinated, but they could not get enough support for that provision.

The FDA approved a new COVID-19 vaccine for children as young as 6 months. The vaccine is a booster to protect against omicron variants. It’s similar to vaccines already approved for children 5 and older. Only 5% of young children are fully vaccinated against COVID-19.

Walmart executives say that shoplifting is getting so severe that it may force them to raise prices and maybe even close some stores. Big retailers say they are losing hundreds of millions of dollars a year to thieves.

One of the nation’s biggest managers of 401(k) retirement accounts says an unprecedented number of people are drawing money out of their accounts to pay for hardships like rent or medical bills. The early withdrawals will cost the investor a penalty plus back taxes.
