Brittney Griner Released in Exchange for “Merchant of Death”
CBS: Brittney Griner, the WNBA star who was held for months in Russian prisons on drug charges, was released Thursday in a one-for-one prisoner swap for international arms dealer Viktor Bout ( CBS). Robby Starbuck: This is who Joe Biden just freed ( Twitter). National Review: In 2010, John Brennan, Obama’s deputy national security advisor for Homeland Security and Counterterrorism, said in an interview that capturing and trying Bout was crucial to thwarting the flow of illegal arms sales to dangerous terrorist entities ( National Review). Benny Johnson: Meet Brittney Griner & Marine Paul Whelan. Both Americans. Both were convicted in Russian courts on dubious charges. Both serving multi-year sentences in Russian prison. Returning Viktor Bout to Russia Will Result in More Death
Breitbart: Sen. Tom Cotton (R-AR) predicted on Thursday that leftist President Joe Biden’s decision to trade imprisoned basketball player Brittney Griner for notorious Russian arms dealer Viktor Bout, known as the “merchant of death,” would result in people dying as rogue states interpreted the move as open season to arrest Americans ( Breitbart). Robbie Gramer: Bout, who was swapped for Griner with Russia, was convicted in 2011 for conspiring to sell millions of dollars worth of weapons to the FARC, a U.S.-designated terrorist group in Colombia, to be used to kill Americans according to the Justice Department ( Twitter). Townhall: “You said the United States would stay vigilant. It sounds like the administration still sees [Viktor Bout] as a security threat, no?” KJP: “We are always going to stay vigilant.” “So you still have security concerns?” KJP: “I’m not the intelligence committee here” ( Twitter).

House Enshrines Same-Sex Marriage Act
New York Times: The House on Thursday gave final approval to legislation to mandate federal recognition for same-sex marriages, with a bipartisan coalition of lawmakers voting in favor of the measure in the waning days of the Democratic-led Congress. With a vote of 258-169, the landmark legislation cleared Congress, sending it to President Biden to be signed into law and capping an improbable path for a measure that only months ago appeared to have little chance at enactment ( New York Times). Daily Wire: The bill would not force states to allow same-sex couples to marry under the Supreme Court’s 2015 Obergefell v. Hodges decision. It would, however, make it so that any “person acting under color of State law” fully recognizes marriage between two people in another state and that the federal government must recognize marriages if they were valid in the state where the marriage occurred ( Daily Wire).

Military Revokes Vaccine Mandates
Fox News: President Biden’s administration is furious that Congress is poised to remove the military’s universal vaccine mandate, a major concession to Republicans on Capitol Hill. Biden and Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin had been pushing Congress to keep the vaccine requirement as a non-negotiable, but Republicans appear to have successfully negotiated an end to the policy in exchange for passing the military’s budget proposal, according to the Washington Post. Biden officials argue ending the mandate will cost lives, while Republicans say they are standing up for individual autonomy ( Fox News). CNN: The provision to rescind the military’s Covid vaccine mandate comes after congressional Republicans pushed for its repeal. In a statement Tuesday night, House GOP leader Kevin McCarthy said, “the end of President Biden’s military COVID vaccine mandate is a victory for our military and for common sense” ( CNN).

Republicans Introduce Border Plan
Townhall: Dozens of Republicans introduced a four-pronged plan to secure the southern border that aims to limit the number of illegal migrants crossing into the U.S. illegally. The measures the plan would implement would be to finish building the border wall, boost the retention of Border Patrol agents, ban federal grants from going to non-governmental organizations that support and assist U.S.-bound migrants, and designate cartels as foreign terrorist organizations ( Townhall). Fox News: Earlier this year, Republicans issued their “Commitment to America” plan which pledged to take action on a number of border security measures and asylum reforms in order to close loopholes, protect national security and discourage a flood of migration that saw more than 2.3 million migrant encounters in FY 2022, and is on track to eclipse that number in FY 2023 ( Fox News).

Federal Trade Commission to Sue $69 Billion Microsoft, Activision Blizzard Merger
Hill: The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) voted Thursday to sue to block Microsoft’s $69 billion acquisition of gaming company Activision Blizzard, adding to the aggressive antitrust action taken under Democratic Chairwoman Lina Khan. The FTC argued that if Microsoft closes the deal, it would have the power to harm competition by being able to change terms to withhold access to Activision’s content, such as the popular “Call of Duty” game, as well as to manipulate pricing and degrade game quality ( Hill). Bloomberg: Microsoft’s proposed Activision Blizzard deal is the company’s largest ever and one of the 30 biggest acquisitions of all time. The transaction would give Microsoft some of the most popular video game franchises, such as Call of Duty and World of Warcraft. The Xbox maker already owns the Halo franchise and Minecraft virtual-world-building game ( Bloomberg).
