Espaillat, García, Correa Statement on Sinema-Tillis Compromise

WASHINGTON, DC -- Today, Representatives Adriano Espaillat (NY-13), Jesús G. "Chuy" García (IL-04), and Jose Luis Correa (CA-46) released the following statement regarding the Sinema-Tillis framework.

“We appreciate the ongoing Senate negotiations and recognition to act on the behalf of the nearly 2 million who are DACA recipients or migrants eligible for the program counting on us to ensure protections for Dreamers,” said the members. “It’s time for Congress to stop playing political games and move forward with meaningful and common sense immigration reform. We are deeply troubled by the Sinema-Tillis framework’s continued assault on asylum seekers.

“Our nation has the moral and legal obligation to guarantee the right to seek asylum to individuals who arrive at our borders. The proposed plan would reinstate the Title 42 expulsion policy while significantly increasing funding for border security. It bolsters a deal to further militarize the border and lacks necessary accountability measures that comprehensive immigration reform would have delivered. In addition to border security funding, the Sinema-Tillis framework would also further expand the use of detention centers, which remain rife with abuse. It would lead to longer jail periods and extended time with limited access to legal counsel or due process. This inhumane proposal would also bar TPS recipients from receiving green cards. Finally, the current proposal creates a lifetime bar for individuals and their families to receive any immigration benefit, including asylum, and harsh sanctions for individuals who fail to appear in court regardless of their fear of persecution.

“We cannot at this time, in good conscience, support the current framework.”

“Agradecemos las negociaciones en curso del Senado y el reconocimiento para actuar en nombre de los casi 2 millones de beneficiarios de DACA o inmigrantes elegibles para el programa que cuentan con nosotros para garantizar la protección de los Dreamers (Soñadores)”, dijeron los miembros del Congreso. “Es hora de que el Congreso deje de jugar juegos políticos y avance con una reforma migratoria integral y de sentido común. Estamos profundamente preocupados por el continuo ataque del marco Sinema-Tillis a los solicitantes de asilo.

“Nuestra nación tiene la obligación moral y legal de garantizar el derecho a solicitar asilo a las personas que llegan a nuestras fronteras. El plan propuesto restablecería la política de expulsión del Título 42 al tiempo que aumentaría significativamente los fondos para la seguridad fronteriza. Refuerza un acuerdo para militarizar aún más la frontera y carece de las medidas de rendición de cuentas necesarias que habría proporcionado una reforma migratoria integral. Además de la financiación de la seguridad fronteriza, el marco Sinema-Tillis también ampliaría aún más el uso de los centros de detención, que siguen estando plagados de abusos. Conduciría a períodos de cárcel más largos y tiempo prolongado con acceso limitado a asesoría legal o al debido proceso. Esta propuesta inhumana también impediría que los beneficiarios de TPS reciban tarjetas verdes.
