John,
Another historic milestone took place today as the Respect for Marriage Act has passed the House.
In the event that the Supreme Court, with itβs overwhelmingly conservative majority and precedent for overturning Roe, were to overturn the ruling that allowed for gay marriage (known as Obergefell v. Hodges) this bill would make it so that each state must recognize a marriage obtained in another state.
This would ensure that if a more conservative state no longer allowed for gay marriage, much like those that had trigger bans ready for post-Roe, then those states would still have to recognize that marriage.
While some on the right have claimed that these rights are not under attack, they also made similar claims before the Dobbs decision - that the Democrats were simply overreacting to the constant news of more restrictions and aggressive rhetoric.
With this bill, the Biden administration will be able to put protections in place for those who may face a less-than-tolerant Republican Party. And while some on the right will continue to espouse hateful and ignorant rhetoric, we will celebrate this win!Β π
We are proud to support the LGBTQ+ community and believe in their right to marry the people they love, period.
John, will you join us in our efforts to continue to stand for the LGBTQ+ community and push for comprehensive legislation and equality for all?
Finally, thank you so much to everyone who has stood with us thus far and has allowed for us to promote and defend the rights and values of all Americans. We stand firm in our fight and look forward to the next few years of accomplishing our goals and making real progress for us ALL.
