Today, Earth Island Journal enters the home stretch of our year-end member drive. To be honest, asking for money isn’t fun. I’m a journalist, not a fundraiser or salesperson. However, for a nonprofit newsroom, contributions from our readers support the hard work of finding and reporting stories — and making those stories available to everyone, without a paywall.

Over these last few years, we’ve seen how fragile democracy is, and how cronyism shamelessly exploits the system to benefit the few to the detriment of many. However, we’ve also seen that one of our most effective weapons against powerful interests is the strength of community.

In this challenging year, Earth Island Journal covered some incredible stories from across the world about the power of community, including stories about:.
* The people of several small towns and villages in Bosnia and Herzegovina who are fighting to protect some of Europe’s last remaining wild rivers from a boom in small hydropower projects ([link removed]) .
