Team,
Growing up as a gay person, I wasn't sure there would be a place for me or if I'd be able to have a family of my own. But I was lucky to be surrounded by people who embraced me for who I am. I’m lucky to live at a time when hearts, minds, and laws are changing.
The Supreme Court set a dangerous precedent for other fundamental rights and freedoms after overturning Roe v. Wade. Justice Clarence Thomas was clear that the right to same-sex marriage could be next up on the chopping block.
Next year I'll be able to marry the love of my life. It's unacceptable that if the Supreme Court heeds Justice Thomas's call, the marriages of millions of Americans, including my own, might not be recognized across the country.
That's why I am both relieved and proud to say the House just voted to pass the Respect for Marriage Act!
This legislation we just passed will protect same-sex unions and continue to uphold the right for Americans to marry who they love – no matter their gender or race. I helped introduce this critical legislation in the House, and I'm excited to see it head to President Biden's desk.
By enshrining marriage equality in federal law, we solidified our basic freedoms to be ourselves, love who we want to love and marry who we choose. I'll always keep fighting to ensure every person is treated equally.
Thank you,
Chris
