Friends,

For nearly a decade, families have been built, and our communities have become stronger and more diverse because people across our country have the right to marry who they love.

This is a fundamental right because the Constitution tells us it is. It says that “all men are created equal”, which means that everyone has the right to good public education, to say what they want because they’re free to do so, to make their own health care decisions, and to marry who they love.

But so many of our fundamental rights codified by the Supreme Court are under threat, including the freedom to marry.

Today, Congress took a historic bipartisan step forward for the rights of interracial and LGBTQ+ families by passing the Respect for Marriage Act, requiring states to respect valid marriages from other states and ensuring federal recognition of marriage regardless of ethnicity, sex, race, or national origin.

With hard work, 39 Republicans signed on along with every Democrat in the House. Soon, this legislation will head to President Biden’s desk to be signed into law and we will have taken a meaningful step in the fight to protect basic human rights.

But we can’t back down from this fight. We must be vigilant and more vocal than ever to protect LGBTQ+ rights and to ensure we move forward. Our diverse communities are our strength. Every person deserves equal access to opportunity and equal treatment under the law.

Let’s stand together, celebrate our progress, then get back to work.
