Earlier today, the House of Representatives passed landmark legislation to protect marriage equality under federal law. I was proud to vote for the Respect for Marriage Act to protect the universal right to marriage equality.
It’s simple: a right is not a right unless it can be equally exercised by all, and every American deserves the freedom to love who they love, free from discrimination.
The conservative-majority Supreme Court’s decision earlier this year to overturn Roe v. Wade was proof that they will not hesitate to rescind long-held constitutional freedoms. The Respect for Marriage Act ensures that families who depend on the rights and privileges guaranteed by marriage equality will no longer need to wonder if one day they will wake up in a nation that no longer recognizes their marriage.
