John,
As you likely read yesterday, there is a serious political conflict regarding the organization of the PA State House. My position is clear - Pennsylvanians voted for new Democratic leadership of the State House, and we must ensure that their voice is heard as quickly as possible by holding the necessary special elections in early February as scheduled by Leader McClinton.
This will either confirm the new direction set in November, or, less likely, turn us back to Republican control. Unfortunately, Republican leadership does not share this view and is moving to use their temporary nominal numerical advantage to defy the message sent by Pennsylvanians in November.
What this means as a practical matter is that Swearing-In Day, January 3rd, will not be a ceremonial passing of the gavel and celebration of the new term, but a drawn-out floor fight on who will be the Speaker of the House and how the chamber is organized. My focus that day will be on ensuring the voters' will is respected.
Traditionally, I would hold a reception or celebration in Harrisburg on swearing-in day. Instead, my family will be attending my Swearing-In at noon and leaving shortly after while I remain on the floor for as long as it takes to confirm the voters' decision.
Know that I will be carrying your friendship, support, and strength as this process unfolds. Thank you for your confidence and support, I look forward to continuing to update you.
Thank you,
Dr. Arvind Venkat
