After the ultra-conservative Supreme Court set a dangerous precedent by overturning Roe v. Wade, it became clear that other fundamental rights and freedoms would soon be under attack, too.

That's why I could not have been more proud – and honored – to help forward the Respect for Marriage Act through the House. This legislation ensures all married couples, including same-sex and interracial couples, are entitled to the rights of marriage, no matter which state they live in.

Enshrining marriage equality into federal law is about solidifying basic rights, allowing millions of Americans to live freely as themselves. It's about defending the right to love openly, proudly, and equally.

I will continue fighting to protect the equality and justice to which all of us are entitled and am proud to see this crucial legislation headed to the President's desk to be signed into law.
