Dear John,

As you may have seen, the U.S. House just passed the (Dis)Respect for Marriage Act, which will now go to President Biden’s desk. Among other things, this bill threatens religious freedom protections in all 50 states. That makes the work of True North Legal even more important. True North Legal fights tirelessly for YOUR freedom to live according to your faith – sadly, that work just became more crucial than ever.

That’s why I’m so glad to tell you that True North Legal was part of one of the biggest religious freedom cases to reach the United States Supreme Court in several years.

Lorie Smith, owner of a website design company called 303 Creative, is facing legal consequences because of how Colorado is using their draconian public accommodations law. Lower courts held that she must violate her belief in Scripture, particularly that marriage is between one man and one woman, if she wants to enter the wedding industry. This means she would be forced to use her artistic talents to design marriage websites for same-sex couples. This unconstitutional ruling simply gives two options: give in to compulsion by the state to violate your sincerely-held religious beliefs or be subject to large fines and prosecution.

Lorie chose to fight back. This week, her appeal went before the U.S. Supreme Court, and early reports from the Court indicate that the Justices are sympathetic to her case!

Give to True North Legal

True North Legal, Reason for Life, and Iowa’s Family Leader teamed up to file an amicus brief in this case in support of Lorie -- and in effect, for all who wish to protect their fundamental rights to religious liberty and free speech. As we wrote in our brief:

“The Court should hold that a public-accommodations law cannot be applied to speech itself to force speakers to convey messages they find objectionable. Adhering to this fundamental principle does not reflect “any particular view about the [speaker’s] message,” but rests “on the Nation’s commitment to protect freedom of speech.” Hurley, 515 U.S. at 581.

This week, right outside of the courtroom, many of our sister organizations joined in a rally to support Lorie and her case, including Victoria Cobb from the Family Foundation of Virginia. Ironically, Victoria and her team had a scheduled dessert reception last week at a restaurant and just minutes beforehand, they were notified by the restaurant owner that they would be refused service because of their stance on pro-family issues. As Victoria commented afterwards, “Welcome to the double standard of the left, where some believe Jack Phillips must be forced to create a wedding cake as part of the celebration of a same-sex ceremony [or Lorie Smith forced to create a wedding website] but any business should be able to deny basic goods and services to those who hold biblical values around marriage.”

Victoria also gave this charge to her supporters: “Our witness will not be diminished, and we will not be silenced. We will speak out when we see this type of religious discrimination occurring in Virginia. As we stand on the front lines of this fight to protect and advance religious freedom for all Virginians, we invite you to stand with us.”

I echo this encouragement from my colleague in Virginia. Here at Minnesota Family Council & Institute, we will continue to stand on the front lines to protect and advance religious freedom for all Minnesotans—through the work of True North Legal and our other initiatives.

Will you support this work, as we seek to hire another attorney and legal assistant so that we have the bandwidth to deal with all the challenges to life, family, and religious freedom that come across our desk?

Your prayers and your partnership with us are so critical. May God be glorified and may our children and grandchildren benefit from such efforts.
