In the past two years, President Biden and Democrats in Congress have made the largest investment in our nation’s history to combat climate change. The $1 trillion infrastructure deal and the Inflation Reduction Act included significant funding to combat climate change by creating millions of jobs to invest in clean energy manufacturing, implementing climate resilience measures for communities facing climate-related disasters, expanding electric vehicle infrastructure, and more. The Inflation Reduction Act was crafted with the goal of reducing carbon emissions by 40 percent by 2030.
But that goal would have been difficult to achieve, due in part to a potential side agreement known as the “Dirty Deal.”
This deal includes speeding up production on the Mountain Valley natural gas pipeline and clearing regulatory hurdles for future coal, oil, and gas projects, further delaying a national shift to clean energy production. Meanwhile, communities jeopardized by hurricanes, flooding, wildfires, and a lack of clean water and air would be in greater danger, risking lives and requiring even more federal spending to rebuild.
We blocked these measures from the Inflation Reduction Act before it passed, and we just blocked them from inclusion in the upcoming vote on the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA).
But this isn’t the end. Fossil fuel giants are going to keep lobbying Congress to put their interests ahead of our environment and the health and safety of the American people.
We can’t allow fossil fuel profits to take priority over a livable planet. With your help, we can make sure we’re on the right track to meet our climate goals and move towards a more sustainable future.
