Licensing Reform and Liberty

What to Know: Shoshana Weissmann of R Street Institute—a passionate advocate for occupational licensing reform—is interviewed for the latest Step Up with Ellen Troxclair podcast.

The TPPF Take: Shoshana’s story is truly inspirational.

“Shoshana has a little different story than a lot of people I’ve interviewed so far,” says TPPF’s Ellen Troxclair. “She’s involved in all kinds of policy issues, but she’s doing it all at a very young age—26.”

Annexation Abuse

What to Know: The city of San Antonio is accused of using “backdoor tactics” to annex land without property owners' consent. San Antonio’s annexation abuses were the catalyst for reform in 2017 and in 2019.

The TPPF Take: The Texas Legislature has reformed certain annexation practices, but there’s more work to do.

“If the city of San Antonio is up to its old tricks, then state lawmakers should make annexation reform a priority in 2021,” says TPPF’s James Quintero. “Conservatives cannot allow calculating city officials to circumvent the important property rights protections achieved in years past.”

Fish or Cut Bait

What to Know: Sen. Josh Hawley, R-Missouri, has introduced a bill that would dismiss articles of impeachment if they’re not delivered to the Senate in a timely manner.

The TPPF Take: Hawley’s bill makes sense.

“This idea of dismissal for want of prosecution is commonplace in both civil and criminal litigation,” says TPPF’s Robert Henneke. “To date, House Democrats’ rationalizations for holding impeachment in a perpetual state of suspension are marked by rampant hypocrisy and duplicity.”
