Park Notes

Hi, Friend of the National Parks!

FEATURED STORY

Urban Stargazing: See More of the Universe at Night

The longer nights and clearer skies make winter an ideal season for
stargazing, but most Americans live in light-polluted areas where the
stars are difficult to see. Fortunately, some national parks feature
darker skies not far from major urban areas.

Budget Deal Boosts Park Funding but Hurts Border Parks

Last month, Congress increased funding for the National Park Service
and other agencies that manage public lands. But lawmakers also
included border wall funding measures that will continue

Ban Mining from the Grand Canyon Watershed

Mining companies have long targeted the Grand Canyon area, threatening
the park's waters and valuable tourism industry. The House of
Representatives recently passed a bill that would permanently ban this
harmful practice from nearly 1 million acres within and near this
awe-inspiring park. Please ask your senators to support this ban.

An Honest Reckoning

Hundreds of people were once enslaved at the opulent Hampton estate,
but for decades after the site became part of the National Park
System, their stories remained hidden. That is changing. Read about

Fighting for Stronger Oversight at Indiana Dunes National Park

NPCA took legal action last month seeking to file an amicus brief opposing a settlement between the United States, the state of Indiana and U.S. Steel Corp. following U.S. Steel's repeated violations of the Clean Water Act. In
2017, the company spilled highly toxic hexavalent chromium into a
waterway near the park, forcing beach closures and public health warnings

accountable.

Quote of the Month

"Parks are not to be placed on the economic scales to be weighed
against kilowatts, productive acreage, school buildings, housing
developments, parking spaces and what not. They are not to be valued
in money. ... Parks are inviolate. This is the strategic stance to
assume when attacks are made to dissipate park lands or values."

- Charles "Cap" Sauers, Chicago-area forest preserve
superintendent, 1952
