John:
The Respect for Marriage Act has OFFICIALLY passed, which means it’s off to President Biden’s desk for a signature!
Interracial and LGBTQ couples deserve the same security, benefits, and recognition that legal marriage provides to every other American couple.

When my wife Elizabeth and I were first married, we had to have the Justice of the Peace perform a Civil Union because Civil Marriage for same-sex couples was not yet legal in Vermont. It didn’t dampen our joy on that day, but it did feel like we were being asked to be content with being second-class citizens.
By passing the Respect for Marriage Act today, no loving couple will ever have to settle for less because of who they love or how they identify. And now, even if the Supreme Court were to overturn the right to marriage guaranteed by the Obergefell decision, your right to marry who you love will remain intact.
As we work to make progress into the future, treating others with kindness, dignity, and respect will always lead us in the right direction. Today, it certainly has.
With love,
Becca Balint
