People For Supporter, People For the American Way has been in the news recently and for good reason. Our team of dogged reporters at Right Wing Watch received high praise from Rachel Maddow on her show just this past week. Maddow endorsed our work to track and expose far-right extremism as a “fire alarm system for the whole country” and a “great public service.” I couldn’t agree more – or be prouder of them. All you have to do is watch the news to see the deadly consequences of extremists pushing bigotry, conspiracy theories, and other undemocratic ideologies into Americans’ homes. Right Wing Watch’s work to document the Far Right’s actions and strategies is urgently necessary — as are People For’s efforts to disrupt those plans. The rampant hatred being spewed by these extremists is leading to violence across the country. I am distressed by the Far Right’s push to focus on our differences, and their efforts to alienate and demonize members of the Jewish community, the LGBTQ community, and those who are migrants. These are efforts to undermine our humanity. I’ve seen it before - I dropped out of college to fight fascism in World War II and I’m not going to let it gain a foothold here. We know that words have power. I am both saddened and angry that once again, demonizing language is being used to inflame our divisions, leading to increasing acts of violence. And too many public officials are unwilling to take a stand against it. The team at People For and Right Wing Watch will never back down in our efforts to shine a light on the people perpetuating bigotry and discrimination, because hate is not the American Way. Please make sure you are following these efforts by signing up on our Right Wing Watch website. >> Thank you for being part of this community that works to uplift and defend Truth, Justice, and the American Way. Thank you, also, for recognizing that our country is enriched by our beautiful mixture of cultures and diverse backgrounds — and for supporting our work to make all our communities valued and safe. I turned 100 this year, but I am not taking a break yet. I have made a lifetime commitment to not letting these extremists gain any more ground. Thank you for being in this fight with me. I, like you, am confident that together, we can win. Your friend, Norman Lear
