Due to conflict in Myanmar many have been forced to flee their homes and live in internal displacement camps. Sham Kai Ling, and her family have lived in Dum Bung camp in Kachin State since 2012 after they fled their home village. The family, like many, struggle to make ends meet.

The COVID-19 pandemic made their financial situation even more precarious. Before they would often cross borders for supplies, but the pandemic brought a stop to this. The family’s sole source of income was from backyard farming and raising pigs.

Alongside the Kachin Regional Development Committee, we provide financial support and training to people facing serious challenges, like Kai Ling’s family.

With this support she has been able to provide for herself and her family by running a small shop, despite the challenges posed by COVID-19.

"Livelihood training has been really beneficial to me in my profession. I learnt to account for family income, spending, and profits by taking these classes.”

Like Kai Ling, we know that more must be done. She has called on municipal governments and other groups to act. The camp desperately needs a clinic and electrical power.
