Dear John,
Last month, the Corvallis, OR city council UNANIMOUSLY passed a Divest from the War Machine resolution! 🎉 By partnering with 19 different organizations focused on climate change, racial justice, peace, and beyond, the Corvallis - Divest from War coalition passed a resolution to prohibit the city from investing in companies which produce weapons of war. These types of local divestment victories make immense differences in our national movement to divest from militarism and reinvest in our communities! However, recent legislative efforts targeting boycotts for Palestinian rights make this type of campaign work much more challenging. In an upcoming webinar, Palestine Legal Senior Attorney Meera Shah will discuss the recent wave of anti-BDS legislation, what their impacts have been so far on Palestine advocacy, and what it means for those of us working to divest from war and militarism more broadly. Please join us on Wednesday, December 14th at 2pm ET/11am PT for The Right to Boycott: Resisting the Crackdown on BDS! Other Divest from War NewsI recently had an article published in Jacobin about the rampant stock trading in Congress — and how Armed Services committee members are profiting immensely from sky-high military budgets and public investments in war profiteers. Read more here: In Congress, War Hawks Trade War Stocks. If you live in New York, Georgia, Arizona, Massachusetts, Oregon, Ohio, or Michigan, please join us in action and call for your Senator to bring a stock trading ban to a vote! New York City — Last week, CODEPINK and Peace Action activists disrupted the New York Times DealBook summit which was hosting Mike Pence, Larry Fink, Benjamin Netanyahu, and other climate and war criminals. Larry Fink is the CEO of Blackrock, an asset management company that supports major military contractors such as Lockheed Martin and Boeing, whose technologies wreak death and destruction worldwide. "They’re using buzzwords to make us think that the billions and trillions of dollars they manage are not actively destroying the planet” states Teddy Ogborn, CODEPINK War Is Not Green campaign coordinator. Read more here. Philadelphia — The Divest Philly from War coalition has been hard at work to pass a City Council resolution to divest Philadelphia’s pension funds from nuclear weapons. From escalated global nuclear tensions, to Philadelphia's support of the international nuclear ban treaty, to the city's commitment to ESG investment, we believe that it’s far past time for Philly to divest from nukes. If you live in the area, please message the Philadelphia Board of Pensions! Chicago — The Divest Chicago from War team remains hard at work to pass the historic Divest Chicago resolution, which would commit the city to divesting its operating budget from the top 100 weapons manufacturers. Although a critical alderman has committed to holding a hearing for the Resolution, his office is now icing out our coalition and delaying a hearing. If you live in Chicago, please join us and write to the Finance Committee requesting a hearing as soon as possible —and contact [email protected] if you are interested in getting more involved with the campaign! Washington, DC — Last month, CODEPINK organizer Olivia DiNucci disrupted a talk with the CEO of Lockheed Martin Jim Taiclet at the Politico America’s Defense Strategy Conference. DiNucci was carried off the stage and removed from the conference after she unfurled a banner that read “Lockheed Loves War”. The conference comes at a time just before Congress will finish the process of passing the National Defense Authorization Act, which funnels billions of our public dollars to war profiteers like Lockheed Martin each year. 70% of Lockheed Martin’s annual revenue comes directly from the US government and American tax dollars. The time to divest from companies like Lockheed Martin is now! Feel free to get in touch with me if you want to discuss divesting your community from the war machine! 🕊 Towards peace, P.S. Join the CODEPINK team and local chapters for a special community meeting Monday, December 12th at 3pm PT/6pm ET! Click here to register. P.P.S. Give the gift of peace by checking out CODEPINK's store! |
