The findings in this today’s World Health Organization World Malaria Report are difficult to read, as progress to end this treatable disease still remains off track if we are to end it within a generation.

This year’s report again highlights the tragic reality that malaria continues to destroy livelihoods, weaken already fragile health systems, and still claims the life of a child every minute.

The continued efforts and resilience of endemic countries has meant deaths and cases have largely stabilised. Malaria cases continued to rise between 2020 and 2021, but at a slower rate than in the period 2019 to 2020. We have not seen significant progress to get back on track towards meeting vital SDG targets, reflecting in part the impact of COVID-19 on malaria programming and infrastructure.

.

The number of global malaria deaths, mostly impacting pregnant women and young children, fell slightly but remains at 619,000.

These latest findings demonstrate that – now more than ever – we need renewed momentum around sustainable funding, strong leadership, and political will in the fight against one of the world’s oldest and deadliest enemies.

This is a disease we can treat and prevent – we just need the determination from our leaders.

** The UK must how renewed leadership
------------------------------------------------------------

The UK has historically been at the forefront of demonstrating leadership and developing the tools required to accelerate the fight to end malaria. In a recent speech, Prime Minister Rishi Sunak described innovation as a “defining focus of this government”.

So we urge him to support British innovation in vaccines, drugs, and next generation bed nets as well as the institutions that get them to people on the ground, so we can change the trajectory and end this disease and save millions of lives.

** Together we can get the fight back on track
------------------------------------------------------------

Today’s WHO World Malaria Report shows that millions of people, largely children under 5, are being put at risk from an easily treatable disease. With your support today we can demand action, and put pressure on world leaders to make no one’s life is cut short by a mosquito bite. Help us turn the pressure up and donate to help end malaria today.
