In the last 15 years, America’s national debt has skyrocketed.

An incredible 70% of that $31 trillion debt load was accumulated from the start of the fiscal year (FY) 2008, October 1, 2007, through FY 2022, September 30, 2022.

And now, interest payments alone are about to exceed what the U.S. spends on the Defense Department.

The national debt has been growing at an unsustainable rate, Friend.

And there are numerous consequences that come with unmanageable debt loads.
 

• Rising interest rates will require higher interest payments on existing debt by the U.S. government, and interest payments on existing debt will eat up a larger and larger share of revenues the government brings in.
   
• Increasing government debt crowds out private sector investment, “which would result in lower business investment and slow the growth of economic output over time,” according to Congress’s own budget office.
   
• Investors may lose confidence in the U.S. government’s ability to pay its bills, increasing the risk of a flight from U.S. debt which would raise borrowing costs for the federal government even further.
   
• Rising debt makes it more difficult for U.S. policymakers to react to future economic and fiscal shocks, such as recessions, military conflicts, natural disasters, and public health crises.

It’s time to tell Congress to tap the brakes, before $31 trillion seems as small in the future as $9 trillion seems now.

We need lawmakers to take even modest steps toward more sustainable debt levels. And like any small first  steps, once they get taken, it’s easier for others to follow, until pretty soon, we’re making real progress.  But unless Congress gets moving, the chance greatly increases that the U.S. will experience another federal debt crisis at some point in coming years. 

This is where NTU plays a critical role. 

Since 1969, NTU has proudly been a major player in signature taxpayer victories of the past five decades:
 

• We were there when the federal tax code was overhauled under President Reagan in 1986.
• We championed the cause for a “Taxpayer Bill of Rights” in the late 80s and 90s and with follow-on legislation, the 2019 Taxpayer First Act.
• In 2017, NTU was the driving force behind the successful push for comprehensive tax reform.
• In 2020, our public education arm launched the Taxpayer Defense Center to fight for taxpayers in court. TDC has already helped to hand the IRS two major defeats in the Supreme Court.
