Good Jobs for Good Airports Act campaign comes to DC today
Workers who clean planes, handle baggage and assist wheelchair passengers will gather at the U.S. Capitol today (see Calendar, above) to demand their members of Congress take action to pass the Good Jobs for Good Airports Act. They'll be joined by Members of Congress, including DC Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton, as well as SEIU International President Mary Kay Henry and other allies. The Capitol Hill action is part of a Day of Action that includes activities in more than 15 cities across the nation. "Airport workers like me and working people all across the economy are fed up," said Verna Montalvo, a cabin cleaner at Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport organizing with SEIU. "It's time that jobs for those of us who keep airports safe, clean and functioning are good jobs you can actually thrive on."
Fund the NLRB
The National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) is in a funding crisis. "We need a fully funded NLRB to investigate unfair labor practices and conduct union elections," says the AFL-CIO. [link removed] Click here and send a letter to your senators to demand funding for the NLRB. All over the country, workers are organizing to win union elections and fight illegal corporate union-busting. The NLRB is supposed to back workers up by enforcing labor law and worker protections, but it's severely underfunded and doesn't have enough staff to do its job. "Without the NLRB, we can't hold corporations accountable or build worker power through stronger unions," says the AFL-CIO. "It's that simple."

Union Voice/Readers Write: Mine worker typo
"Thanks for your great newsletter," writes UC reader Regina. "BTW - typo - the UMWA [link removed] 110-day national coal strike was in 1977, not 1997."
Labor Quote: American Federation of Labor
"A struggle is going on in all of the civilized world between oppressors and oppressed of all countries, between capitalist and laborer..."
From the founding document's preamble of the American Federation of Labor (AFL), founded on this date in 1886 by 25 unions in Columbus, Ohio; Cigarmaker's union leader Samuel Gompers was elected president.
