Investors More Worried About Stagflation Than Inflation

Daily Wire: Institutional investors are more concerned with stagflation than a recession next year. The investment bank found that 65% of institutions see stagflation, which refers to economic stagnation combined with inflationary pressures, as a more significant threat than a recession. Rising price levels are still seen as the top overall risk for the year ahead; 69% of investors identified inflation as the greatest threat to their portfolios (Daily Wire). Natixis: Institutional investors recognize that central banks have been ready to respond with rate hikes. But nearly three-quarters (73%) recognize that bankers cannot curb inflation on their own. In the end, six in ten (59%) think recession is inevitable. Asked directly, 54% of institutions believe recession is necessary (Natixis).

Oregon Teacher Union Membership Sharply Declines
National Review: Oregon’s largest teachers’ union says it’s dealing with a membership crisis, with its ranks shrinking dramatically in recent years. Since 2020, the Oregon Education Association lost 1,150 members and the percentage of union-represented teachers who qualified as active members dropped from 85.6 percent to 81.2 percent. Another 600 members have reportedly cut ties since April, bringing union membership to below 80 percent, the organization said. Nearly one in five teachers have left the union in the past two years alone (National Review). Freedom Foundation: Until 2018, Oregon was one of 23 states without right-to-work protections for government workers, meaning teachers and thousands of other public employees were required to financially support union activities. That changed when the U.S. Supreme Court, in Janus v. AFSCME, affirmed that mandatory union payments violate public employees’ First Amendment rights (Freedom Foundation).

Oregon Judge Holds Gun Control Law from Taking Effect
Washington Examiner: An Oregon state court judge placed a hold on the state’s strict new voter-approved gun control measure late Tuesday, only hours after a federal court judge allowed a ban on the sale and transfer of high-capacity magazines to go into effect. Now, Harney County Judge Robert Raschio’s ruling muddies the waters on the implementation of Measure 114, which was set to go into effect Thursday. Oregon Attorney General Ellen Rosenblum vowed to appeal the matter straight to the state Supreme Court (Washington Examiner). Ellen Rosenblum: What’s next? We will petition to the Oregon Supreme Court ASAP, seeking to align the result in our state courts with the federal court’s well-reasoned and thoughtful decision (Twitter). Townhall: Last month, when the measure looked to pass, some members of law enforcement in Oregon said that they would not enforce aspects of it (Townhall).

It also includes provisions that authorize “presidential drawdown authority” to fast-track military aid to Taiwan in a manner similar to U.S. aid for Ukraine (Washington Times). Fox News: With a new children’s book out that celebrates family, faith and biblical wisdom, actor-writer-producer Kirk Cameron cannot reach scores of American children or their families in many U.S. cities via the public library system because over 50 public libraries have either outright rejected him or not responded to requests on his behalf. Many of the same libraries that won’t give Cameron a slot, however, are actively offering “drag queen” story hours or similar programs for kids and young people (Fox News).
