John,
My name is Akiah Selwa and I supervise the participants of Immigrants Rising’s Mental Health Career Program (MHCP). MHCP provides undocumented pre-licensed mental health professionals in California with the hands-on training, professional development, and mentoring they need to launch their careers as therapists. The program is really unique, I don’t know of any other agency offering this life-changing opportunity to pre-licensed therapists in the state of California. By supporting undocumented folks to accumulate hours toward their licensure, we are engineering a solution to a really significant problem: the need for more culturally competent providers for underserved communities in California.
Invest in innovative mental health programming for the undocumented community.

As a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT) with over 24 years of experience working with clients in the public health and private practice sectors, I am committed to creating spaces that are grounded in acceptance and empowerment. I know that when given the right tools and support, our undocumented community not only has the power to heal themselves, but to lift up their friends, families, and peers.
That’s why I’m so excited to share this new video created by Mariel Martinez. An actress, filmmaker, and mental health advocate who was formerly undocumented in her youth, Mariel generously donated her time to help us expand the impact of the MHCP and create more opportunities for undocumented mental health professionals. Forward it to your networks, and join us on our mission to make mental health support more accessible, affordable, and culturally appropriate for our undocumented community.
