It’s been just over a year since North Carolina Republicans passed their brand-new legislative and Congressional maps, shamelessly gerrymandering our districts and dividing our residents along political lines for their own political gain — disenfranchising thousands of voters in the process.
When I see injustice, I call it like I see it — Republicans tried to silence voters and undermine our democracy.
Thankfully, our state’s Supreme Court saw this attack on our democracy for what it was and overturned these politically gerrymandered maps. But the fight isn’t over yet.
Today, the U.S. Supreme Court will hear Republicans’ appeal to our state Supreme Court’s ruling, Moore v. Harper — putting our free and fair elections in serious jeopardy.
North Carolina’s population has grown and diversified over the years, and our districts should reflect that. Creating fair districts to ensure each person’s vote is counted and voice is heard — no matter the zip code — is crucial to protecting our democracy.
The only ones who have the power to choose their representatives should be the people, not self-interested politicians. It’s up to us to stop this offense to our democracy in its tracks.
